Thomas D. Farnsworth was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Iowa’s Henry B. Tippie College of Business.
During his undergraduate years, Thomas clerked at a local law firm and worked as a pretrial interviewer for the Sixth Judicial District of Iowa. In 2004, he began an accelerated program at the University of Iowa College of Law, graduating in December 2006.
While in law school, Thomas was licensed by the Iowa Supreme Court to serve as a prosecuting legal intern in Johnson County from May 2005 to December 2006. In this role, he prosecuted simple misdemeanors, including traffic violations, alcohol offenses, thefts, and assaults, and assisted with indictable offenses, such as operating while intoxicated, theft, embezzlement, and assault.
Mr. Farnsworth has completed the same standardized field sobriety testing and Datamaster DMT training as law enforcement officers. He has also participated in numerous DOT hearings and reviewed thousands of hours of case videos, bringing a thorough and personalized approach to each unique client and case.
After graduating law school, Mr. Farnsworth received offers from several prosecutors’ offices across Iowa and private firms outside Iowa City. However, as a fourth-generation Iowa Citian, he chose to stay in his hometown to serve Iowa City and the greater eastern Iowa area. He began his career in criminal defense immediately after law school, focusing on a client-centered approach. Although some encouraged him to pursue general practice, he found his calling in criminal defense.
Mr. Farnsworth knew he had established himself when his family’s longtime attorneys began referring cases to him. In 2018, he founded Farnsworth Law PLC to continue the client-centered focus he began in 2006, determined to serve his community and carve his own path.
